A few years ago, hardly anyone outside of scientific research had heard the name Akkermansia muciniphila. Now you'll see it on more and more supplement labels. It Lives In A Place Most Bacteria Don't
Akkermansia muciniphila lives in the mucus layer that lines your gut, a spot most other bacteria don't hang out in. It actually eats that mucus (which your body keeps making more of), and in doing so, it seems to help keep that protective lining strong.
In a healthy gut, this bacteria usually makes up a small slice of your total gut bacteria. Studies have noticed that people with less of it tend to have worse blood sugar and weight-related health markers, which is part of why scientists wanted to study it more closely.
Why Scientists Got Interested
Early interest came from studies in mice, where more Akkermansia was consistently tied to less obesity and better metabolic health. That's a good clue, but mouse studies don't always hold up in humans, which is why the human study mattered so much.
The Big Human Study (2019)
In 2019, researchers ran a study where overweight adults with blood sugar issues took either a live or a heat-treated (pasteurized) version of this bacteria every day for three months, compared to a group taking a placebo (fake pill).
The results were promising. The heat-treated version significantly improved blood sugar control and lowered cholesterol compared to placebo. Both versions were safe, with no major side effects. There were also small, positive trends in body weight, though those didn't reach a level scientists consider statistically solid in this particular study. You can read the study here.
Interestingly, the heat-treated version actually did better than the live version on some measures, a surprising result that researchers are still trying to understand.
Can You Grow More Of It Naturally?
Your diet and lifestyle both seem to affect how much of this bacteria you naturally have. Things that may help:
- Foods high in polyphenols, like cranberries, pomegranate, and green tea, may help this bacteria grow.
- Eating more fiber in general, since a well-fed gut tends to support this bacteria better.
- Eating less for a period of time (like intermittent fasting) has been linked to more of this bacteria in some studies.
- Taking a supplement that includes this bacteria along with fiber to help support it.
